CSRの起こり
When we look back at the CSR activities of Western companies, we see that the background to these activities are based on NGOs, NPOs, and local communities. Stakeholders have been closely involved in this process, particularly as economic globalization advanced in the second half of the 20th century and the change went even deeper.
欧米企業のCSR活動を振り返ってみると、NGO、NPO、地域コミュニティに基盤を置いていることがわかります。とくに20世紀後半に経済のグローバル化が進むにつれて、こうした活動にステークホルダーが深く関与するようになっていきました。
ロイヤル・ダッチ・シェルの２つの教訓
In 1993, the Ogoni tribe, a minority tribe, began protesting at a Shell Nigerian oil rig to challenge the environmental pollution in the area and the unfair treatment of the tribal people. In 1995, nine human rights activists representing the Ogoni were detained over the conflict. Governments, environmental and human rights NGOs and others urged the Nigerian government to ensure that the trial is conducted fairly but was executed by the then Sani Abacha military regime. Shell was held socially responsible for their complicity with the military regime as a result of this incident.
ロイヤル・ダッチ・シェルがナイジェリアで行った石油採掘により環境汚染が生じました。地域の農業・漁業にも大きな影響を及ぼすこととなり、先住民族のオゴニ族は強烈な抗議運動を始めました。その結果、ナイジェリア軍事政権はオゴニ族の代表的な人権活動家ケン・サロウィワ（環境破壊とオゴニ族に対する虐待行為に抗議する非暴力活動リーダー）氏ら９人を拘束したのです。各国の政府、環境・人権NGOなどは裁判を公正に行うようナイジェリア政治に求めましたが、９人はナイジェリア軍事政権によって処刑されてしまいます。この拷問や弾圧の過程でシェルがかかわっていたとされ、社会的責任を問われました。
to ensure thatは「～（that以下）を保証する、確かにする」。確実に～するように（求める）と訳せばよいでしょう。
なお、サロウィワ氏の遺族がシェルに損害賠償を請求していましたが、2009年6月、遺族に1550万ドルを支払うことで和解が成立しました。
