Since the 1990s, environmental problems such as climate change, conflict, terrorism, and widening disparities have become more serious on a global scale. Amidst globalization, environmental destruction, child labour, low-wage labour, and other labour rights issues, which are mainly caused by corporate activities, have also been exposed, especially in developing countries.

on a global scale は「地球規模で」。

As these issues are recognized as a common threat to human sustainability, companies are increasingly required to reduce the negative impacts of their operations and supply chains on society and the environment, and to contribute to solving global social issues by using their technological capabilities, products, services and business models. In this way, topics related to social responsibility and sustainability have become crucial for corporate management.

The Global Social Agenda, “Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015. At its core, the SDGs consist of 17 goals and 169 targets. At the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), held in Paris in December of the same year, the parties formally agreed on the Paris Agreement, an international framework for combating global warming after 2020.

The SDGs assume that governments will set national goals and reflect them in their national strategies, and Japan is no exception. In fact, there is a lot of overlap between the issues that Japan faces, and the global issues set forth in the SDGs. Japan has been facing various kind of problems including high frequency and increasing scale of natural disasters and their tremendous impact, worsening income disparities, child poverty, employment issue, gender inequality, food waste. Japan’s population is aging rapidly, and social welfare issues are becoming more serious.
